First Impressions
The DV8 Violent Collision, released in December 2023, expands the successful Collision series with a dedicated pearl version that immediately catches the eye with its blue, silver and pink color scheme. At the center of the ball sits the proven asymmetric Collision core, with a low 2.462 RG and a high 0.052 differential (at 15 lbs), which from a physics standpoint should produce an early revving action and a high flare potential. The key change on this model, however, is the cover: DV8 combines the powerful HK22 base (HyperKinetic22) with the Havoc Pearl additive here. This combination, finished out of the box at 500, 1000, 1500 Siaair followed by Factory Compound, is aimed at giving the ball a very smooth surface in order to minimize friction in the heads. Technically, the Violent Collision is built to store energy and release it at the breakpoint in a drastic change of direction. The workmanship looks high quality, and the integration of the HK22 technology promises, as with previous models using this chemistry, a cleaner color rendition and a more responsive reaction to friction.
Comparison
Within its own product family, the Violent Collision clearly sets itself apart from its predecessors and serves as a logical addition. While the original DV8 Collision (solid) and the Brutal Collision (hybrid) were laid out for an earlier read of the lane and a rounder motion, the Violent Collision positions itself as the option for more length and angle. In a direct comparison it would start up later than the Brutal Collision, but in exchange offer a quicker response to the dry boards at the end of the oil pattern. Looking at the broader market, the Violent Collision fits into the category of strong, asymmetric pearl balls. In its ball motion it competes with the Storm Virtual Energy Blackout or the Hammer Black Widow 2.0 Hybrid, for example. Compared to symmetric pearl balls, though, the asymmetric core of the Violent Collision should generate more defined torque in the midlane, which ought to make it less prone to over/under reactions as long as there is enough oil in the front part of the lane. It is therefore more aggressive off the backend than typical mid-performance balls, but it also demands more control from the bowler.
On the Lanes
Based on its technical specifications and the compound finish, the DV8 Violent Collision is primarily suited to medium to heavier oil patterns, and its strength should come through especially once the lane has already seen some transition. At the start of a league session on fresh oil it may skid a bit too long if you don't have much hand rotation, but as soon as the front part of the lane opens up and the heads dry out, this ball should show its full potential. The ideal scenario is a lane that is breaking down: when you are forced to move further left (for right-handers) and throw the ball out over the boards to the right, the HK22 cover should store enough energy to bring the ball back to the pocket from a deep angle. The ball is designed to generate a lot of hook in the back part of the lane while maximizing the entry angle, which should have a positive effect on carry. For beginners, the strong change of direction at the breakpoint could be hard to control, which is why it is better suited to advanced bowlers who know how to manipulate friction. It is the tool of choice when a skid-flip reaction is wanted without giving up the punch of a big asymmetric core.
