First Impressions
The Roto Grip Transform Pearl comes in a striking color combination of Red, Cherry and Shadow that shows up well on the lane. At the heart of the ball is the asymmetric Morph-Wing Core, a new development in the field of adjustable core dynamics. In 15 pounds it carries a 2.51 RG, a 0.051 differential and a 0.015 intermediate differential. Those numbers promise a clearly defined, asymmetric motion with high flare potential. One notable feature of this core is its special wing geometry. The design was created to give the driller the ability to significantly alter the core dynamics through targeted material removal during the drilling process. This should make the ball motion extremely customizable. The core is wrapped in the MicroTrax Pearl Reactive coverstock, which according to the manufacturer is fully infused with nanoparticles. The ball ships with the so-called Power Edge finish, which gives it a high-gloss look and should support very easy glide through the heads without losing the necessary traction in the midlane.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Roto Grip Transformer with its dull solid surface, the Transform Pearl should offer noticeably more length in the heads and develop a considerably more aggressive change of direction at the end of the oil pattern. Where the Transformer is built to read the lane very early with a steady, more arcing reaction, the Transform Pearl aims at efficiently getting through front lane sections that have already been played. Set against a widely used symmetric benchmark ball like the Storm Phaze II, the Transform Pearl shows clearly more angular, more reactive behavior. The Storm Phaze II revs up earlier and stands out with a round, very predictable motion. The Transform Pearl, on the other hand, should hold its stored energy considerably longer and turn back toward the pocket drastically sharper once it contacts friction. The nano material blended into the cover should prevent uncontrolled skidding in oilier areas. That can give the ball a noticeable stability advantage over classic pearl balls, since it reacts less sensitively to uneven oil distribution or carrydown in the backend.
On the Lanes
The ideal range of use for the Roto Grip Transform Pearl lies mainly on medium to medium-heavy oil conditions. It should show its full performance especially when the oil pattern moves into transition, the front part of the lane dries up and players are forced to move their lines further inside. The special nano-enriched makeup of the surface should ensure that the ball still finds enough traction in the midlane under tougher conditions to generate a strong and, above all, continuous hook at the breakpoint. All told, this should lead to reliable carry and the best possible entry angle into the pins, even when playing deeper lines. Thanks to the wide-ranging adjustability of the asymmetric Morph-Wing core, the ball can be tailored to nearly any player type. If you have a lower rev rate, you can choose a layout that produces an earlier and more stable backend motion. If you are rev-dominant, you can have the ball drilled so that you can call on extreme angles for deep lines over the inside boards without having to worry about the ball burning up its energy too early.
