First Impressions
The Roto Grip Hustle VP, released in June 2026, expands one of the most established entry-level and light-oil lines in modern bowling. Visually, the ball stands out with a striking Vanilla and Popsicle color combination, giving it a distinct presence on the lane. At the heart of this piece sits the thoroughly proven symmetric Hustle Core, which has distinguished itself across a wide variety of models for over a decade. In the standard 15-pound weight, this core delivers a radius of gyration of 2.53 and a rather moderate differential of 0.030. These specific numbers are deliberately laid out to produce a very controllable, smooth and above all repeatable ball motion that avoids abrupt, hard-to-read reactions. The core is wrapped in the VTC Pearl Reactive coverstock, with VTC standing for Versatile Traction Control. Unlike the hybrid or solid versions in the Hustle line, this cover comes with a factory Power Edge Polish. This mirror-smooth condition should ensure that the ball skids very easily through the heads and efficiently stores the rotational energy it picks up for the back part of the lane. The combination of the predictable core and the smooth pearl surface aims at clean length with a clearly defined, more angular reaction at the breakpoint.
Comparison Compared directly to its sibling, the Roto Grip Hustle SOS with its hybrid cover, the Hustle VP delivers noticeably more length through the front part of the lane and reacts appreciably sharper at the end of the oil pattern. Where the hybrid and solid versions of the line work considerably rounder and more controlled through the midlane, the pearl cover on the VP creates a somewhat more explosive and more direct change of direction. Set against a much stronger benchmark model such as the Storm Phaze II, the Hustle VP shows far less hook potential on fresh oil. It builds almost no early traction in heavy oil, which makes it entirely unsuitable for heavy and long oil volumes. Compared to strong asymmetric high-performance balls, the symmetric Hustle VP has a clearly flatter and less dominant core dynamic. On drier lanes, however, that is an enormous advantage, since it does not react to friction too early and therefore prevents an uncontrollable jump past the intended target area.
On the Lanes The Roto Grip Hustle VP was designed primarily for lane conditions with light to medium oil volume and serves several groups at once. On one hand, it is aimed at beginners and advanced newcomers looking for an extremely predictable, easy-to-control ball to learn and refine playing with hook. On the other hand, it proves to be a highly valuable tool for experienced tournament players later in a competition. When heavy transition dries up the front part of the lane more and more and stronger balls find friction too early, giving up a great deal of energy for the final carry, the Hustle VP provides exactly the length that is so badly needed. Thanks to the pearl cover and the polished finish, the ball glides effortlessly through heavily played heads and still retains enough power to drive into the pocket at the perfect angle. If you have a rather low ball speed, you'll benefit enormously from the late reaction, since the ball does not starve out early on dry boards. Likewise, if you have a very high rev rate, you can play deep boards and project the ball extremely far outside without having to worry about it jumping aggressively before the breakpoint and costing you control.
