First Impressions
The Hammer Envy Revolution presents itself as a significant step forward within Hammer's high-performance line and targets primarily heavy oil and demanding lane conditions. Visually, the ball stands out with a striking color combination of red, yellow and black, mixed in the so-called "solid" process, which underlines the aggressive nature of the coverstock. Technically, this ball is based on a combination of proven and modified technologies. At its heart sits the new Envy Flip Asymmetric Core. Here the engineers modified the original Envy core by placing a special flip block on top of the core body. This change should influence the mass distribution such that the ball still revs up early but retains more energy for the move into the pocket at the end of the pattern. This core is wrapped in the Envy Solid CFI (Carbon Fiber Infused) cover. Injecting carbon fiber into the shell is a technological differentiator designed to increase the durability of the material while optimizing energy transfer to the pins in order to improve carry. With a 2.505 RG, a 0.055 differential and an intermediate differential of 0.021 (at 15 lbs), the Envy Revolution clearly positions itself among the strong asymmetric balls. The surface comes out of the box with a 500/1500 Siaair Micro Pad finish, which creates an extremely rough texture. These specs suggest the ball is designed to dig into the lane immediately once it has passed the heads, so that it reads reliably even with high oil volumes.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Hammer Envy, the Revolution shows a clear shift in where the reaction happens. While the original Envy was known for its extremely early start and a very round, almost braking motion, the Envy Revolution should develop more dynamics in the back part of the lane thanks to the new flip block. That places it as the more aggressive variant, one that still reads early but makes a more defined change of direction. Compared to the Hammer Envy Tour, which has a more controlled and somewhat weaker asymmetry, the Revolution offers considerably more overall hook and is designed for higher oil volumes. Looking at the competition, the Envy Revolution compares most closely to balls like the Eternity Pi from Storm or the Mindset from Brunswick. Both competing products target the same "big asym solid" segment. Against the Harsh Reality from 900 Global, the Envy Revolution should show a somewhat different kind of energy release at the pin deck due to the carbon fiber technology, though both balls try to minimize the problem of "burning up" that comes with surfaces this strong. One key difference from many other balls in this category is the developers' intent to create a motion that, despite the dull 1500 finish, is not defined exclusively by traction but also features a visible move at the end. It is therefore less "smooth" than a typical snowplow ball for heavy oil, but offers more safety in the friction than shiny pearl balls.
On the Lanes
The ideal application for the Hammer Envy Revolution is clearly on lanes with high oil volume or on fresh patterns where the heads and the midlane are still untouched. Because of the rough 1500 Siaair surface, the ball needs a sufficient amount of oil so it doesn't lose energy too early. On drier lanes, or once the heads have been played in, the ball may tend to roll out too early and lose punch in the pocket. It works excellently as the first ball out of the bag to read the oil pattern and establish a line. If you throw the ball fast, the Envy Revolution is a tool that should help generate the necessary hook without forcing you to adjust your technique. The strong traction ensures the ball doesn't slide through the breakpoint even at high speed. Conversely, rev-dominant players benefit from the control the rough surface provides, since it keeps the ball from reacting too sensitively to small mistakes at the end of the pattern. The ball is designed to delay the transition of the pattern as long as possible by using the oil in the front part of the lane to store energy. Once it hits friction, the modified core should deliver a powerful move toward the boards. Bowlers should note, however, that because of its strength this ball requires a certain amount of maintenance to keep the cover tacky, and that on burned-up lanes it should be swapped fairly quickly for a ball with higher RG or a shinier surface.
