First Impressions
The Dyno-Thane Remedy PHD, released in late 2001, presents itself as a classic, high-performance reactive bowling ball in an all-blue look. The distinctive PHD in the name points directly to the innovative heart of this model, the so-called Perimeter Halo Design. This is a symmetrical, two-piece weight block whose equator is surrounded by a special ring of high-density core material. According to the manufacturer, this specific construction should deliver noticeably increased dynamics and more physical torque on the lane. Expressed in bare technical numbers, the core provides a medium RG value of 2.55 combined with a solid differential of 0.045. On paper this setup generates a flare potential of more than five inches, which supports a quick revving up in the midlane. This advanced core is wrapped in the blue SH3 Plus reactive coverstock. The reactive surface comes out of the box sanded very dull and rough with a 600 finish, which unmistakably points to early traction and pronounced readability on oily lane profiles.
Comparison
If a modern benchmark ball such as the Storm Phaze II is brought in for a direct comparison, both conceptual parallels and clear generational performance differences can be identified on the lane. Both models rely on a strong symmetrical core paired with a very dull, tacky reactive surface fundamentally designed for a smooth, easily controllable ball motion. Due to the more modern chemical composition of its cover, however, the Storm Phaze II will inevitably build up considerably more overall traction on today's heavier oil patterns and transition into a strong roll phase even earlier. In direct comparison, the Dyno-Thane Remedy PHD behaves somewhat more forgiving while skidding through the heads, since its older cover does not bite into the oil quite as aggressively as current high-end models. Even so, the blue ball shows a highly predictable and continuous ball motion at the breakpoint, without turning suddenly or too sharply toward the pocket. It offers a harmonious, smooth arc strongly reminiscent of classic solid reactions, while the integrated Halo core design always provides sufficient hook on the backend once the ball reliably reaches the dry area.
On the Lanes
With its rough dull surface and medium RG value, the Dyno-Thane Remedy PHD is primarily suited to fresh, medium-heavy to heavier oil conditions. The very tacky coverstock provides enough traction, especially at the start of a set, to prevent the breakpoint from sliding out unintentionally, while the core simultaneously creates a very smooth and excellently controllable reaction. If you prefer a calm, predictable ball motion and like to play relatively direct lines over the outside boards, this ball offers very high and consistent reliability. When the lanes dry up over the course of a league night or tournament and the inevitable transition sets in, the rough 600 surface may build friction too early, which then leads to a premature loss of energy before the ball reaches the pins. In such moments, a timely switch to a model with a polished pearl surface would be advisable. On extremely heavily oiled modern sport patterns, the ball may reach its limits with its older cover, since the chemical technology from 2001 simply was not designed for today's massive oil volumes. On typical, moderate house shots or lightly played lanes, however, it is a very solid tool that finds a reliable and consistent path to the pocket and generates steady carry through its constant, controlled roll.
