First Impressions
The Jet Bowling Propulsion Hybrid comes in a striking color combination of Crimson, Blue and Mercury. Inside works an asymmetric core whose specifications dictate a ball motion heavily focused on backend movement. With a medium-high radius of gyration of 2.555, the core noticeably delays the onset of the roll phase, giving the ball a very pronounced amount of length down the lane. This is combined with a strong primary differential of 0.055 as well as a significant intermediate differential of 0.018. These numbers point to massive flare potential across the boards and promise enormously asymmetric dynamics as soon as the ball reaches the breakpoint. The cover is the VersaMAXX-9 HD Hybrid surface. Out of the box, this coverstock carries a 1500 grit polished finish. This smooth preparation should guarantee that the ball glides through the heads without resistance even when there is less oil in the front part of the lane. The hybrid nature of the cover should combine the best of both worlds: the effortless glide of a pearl paired with the marginally steadier traction of a solid through the midlane. Together, these components form a classic asymmetric skid-flip design, built for a very fast and violent change of direction at the end of the oil pattern.
Comparison
Placing the Jet Bowling Propulsion Hybrid alongside established models clearly shows its asymmetric, length-oriented character. Compared to a symmetric hybrid ball like the Storm Phaze III, the Jet model plays considerably more angular. Where the Phaze III generates a rounder and steadier move to the pin deck thanks to its symmetric core, the Propulsion Hybrid uses its high intermediate differential to turn toward the pocket much sharper and more aggressively at the friction edge. Bringing in a strongly asymmetric solid ball, for example the Motiv Jackal Ghost, makes the enormous influence of the polished surface apparent. Because of its low RG and dull surface, the Jackal Ghost digs into the oil extremely early and generates a hefty midlane presence. The Propulsion Hybrid, by contrast, glides almost entirely through that area and stores its energy for the last third of the lane. Against pure asymmetric pearl balls such as the Hammer Black Widow 3.0 Pearl, the VersaMAXX-9 HD Hybrid surface still offers a marginally calmer transition. Where a highly polished pearl sometimes jumps off the friction almost abruptly, the solid content in the Propulsion Hybrid's cover softens that moment slightly, without neutralizing the characteristically brutal backend behavior of the asymmetric engine.
On the Lanes
The ideal scenarios for the Jet Bowling Propulsion Hybrid are medium to slightly heavy oil patterns, especially when the ball has to cover a long distance before building hook. Once transition sets in over the course of a tournament, the heads dry up more and more but there is still enough volume deep in the oil, this ball shows its full strengths. If you play long angles from inside to outside across the boards and need a ball that comes back reliably from steep angles, you'll find this model an extremely fitting tool. As soon as the Propulsion Hybrid touches friction in the backend, the asymmetric design should deliver a tremendous release of power and maximize the entry angle, which in practice tends to have a very positive effect on carry. If you throw the ball slower, the high RG combined with the polish provides helpful and automatic length control that prevents the ball from burning up prematurely. On extremely short oil patterns or on lanes with completely dried-out backends, however, the strong asymmetric reaction can quickly become too aggressive and lead to overreaction. When the conditions are right, though, the Propulsion Hybrid delivers an impressive combination of clean length through used-up oil and a very angular, uncompromising end reaction.
