First Impressions
The Storm DNA Coil II, an overseas release from April 2024, marks the next step in the evolution of the Premier line. Visually, the ball stands out with its striking color combination of Scarlet, Persian Blue and Raven, which immediately identifies it as a high-performance tool. At its heart sits the proven Supercoil core, an asymmetric design that signals extremely early rotational readiness with a low 2.47 RG and a 0.053 differential (at 15 lbs). This powerful engine is wrapped in the EXO Pearl Reactive coverstock, finished at the factory with Reacta Gloss. This technical combination creates a fascinating dynamic: while the beefy low-RG block should want to go to work very early in the midlane, the polished pearl surface should ensure a clean pass through the heads. The result is a ball that should retain surprisingly much traction in oil for a pearl version without sacrificing the typical length. Unlike many classic "skid-flip" balls, the DNA Coil II is designed to read friction in a more controlled fashion and to generate a continuous, arcing motion into the pin deck rather than turning abruptly.
Comparison
Placed side by side with other balls in the high-performance segment, the DNA Coil II sets itself clearly apart. Compared to the original Storm DNA, which serves as a "snowplow" for heavy oil thanks to its solid cover, the Coil II should get through the heads more easily and save its energy more efficiently for the backend. Bring in the Roto Grip Attention Star, and the DNA Coil II should roll up earlier and show a rounder motion at the breakpoint due to its lower RG value (2.47 vs. 2.48) and its more massive core, while the Attention Star often makes a sharper, hockey-stick-like change of direction. Against the Storm Virtual Energy Blackout, known for its explosive reaction to dry, the DNA Coil II should offer a more stable, less over/under-prone reaction. A comparison to the Storm Absolute Power is instructive as well: where the Absolute Power, as a solid ball, shows a very early and extremely round lane characteristic, the DNA Coil II should generate more length through its pearl cover and allow a steeper entry angle into the pocket without becoming uncontrollable.
On the Lanes
The primary application of the Storm DNA Coil II is on medium to heavy oil patterns, especially during the transition phase. When pure solid balls start to lose energy too early or hook in the heads, this ball offers the ideal solution. It should allow you to move deeper on the lane and open up the boards without losing contact with the pocket. Thanks to the combination of the rev-happy Supercoil core and the EXO Pearl surface, it is excellent for using the wetter areas in the middle of the lane while still generating enough carry when the ball reaches the drier outside boards. If you have a high rev rate, it offers the control you need to avoid overshooting your target, while if you have a lower rev rate, you should benefit from the support of the strong core, which reliably gets the ball into a roll. The DNA Coil II is thus less a ball for an extremely dry backend and more a dependable partner for handling changing lane conditions with a strong but predictable motion.
