First Impressions
Released in April 2024, the Columbia 300 Kaboom makes a visual statement with a Blue and Sapphire color scheme that really pops thanks to the high-gloss finish. Technically, this ball marks an interesting development in the brand's mid-performance segment. At its center works the newly developed symmetrical "Detonate" core. In 15 lbs, it carries an RG of 2.529 and a differential of 0.046. Those numbers point to a ball that aims to conserve energy for the last third of the lane. This core is wrapped in the HK22 - Reflex Pearl coverstock. The combination of the HK22 base formula, known for how readily it responds to friction, and the pearl additive should help the ball glide cleanly through the heads. The "Factory Compound" finish (500/1000/1500 Siaair plus polish) underscores that character and suggests a length-oriented ball reaction with a quick response to dry boards at the breakpoint even before the first shot.
Comparison
Within the Columbia 300 line, the Kaboom slots in strategically below high-performance pieces like the Atlas or Speed, but shows itself to be more aggressive than entry-level options. Set against the Columbia 300 Explosion (often used as a reference in this class), the Kaboom covers somewhat fewer boards overall, but generates a noticeably sharper angle at the breakpoint. Where balls with the classic Resurgence core tend to read earlier and roll rounder, the higher RG of the Detonate core in the Kaboom lets the ball store energy longer. Compared to an Eruption Pearl, the Kaboom should build more traction in the midlane through the HK22 cover without sacrificing length. Looking further across the market, the Kaboom can be compared to balls like the Hammer Vibe Radioactive, with the Kaboom's HK22 surface potentially allowing a faster transition on contact with dry spots. It thus functions as the logical "step-down" option when stronger, sanded balls like the Columbia 300 Atlas lose energy too early or "burn up."
On the Lanes
The ideal scenario for the Kaboom is lanes with medium oil volume or conditions that have already broken down (transition). With an RG above 2.50 and the polished surface, the ball largely ignores the heads, which makes it a weapon once the front part of the lane starts to grab and has dried up. If you have lower ball speed, it provides the help needed to get the ball through the front part of the lane, while if you have a high rev rate you'll benefit from the ball's ability to open up the pocket even from deep inside lines. When the lane dries up over the course of a set and friction increases up front, the Kaboom lets you move left (for right-handers) and send the ball well out over the boards, with the HK22 coverstock providing the "snap" needed to maximize carry even at steep entry angles. It is less suited to fresh, very oily lanes ("long oil"), where it would risk sliding past the breakpoint.
