BOWLING BALL INFOS

First Impressions
The Visionary Warlock DC Tour Edition, which hit the market in September 1998, shows up in a very striking, all-over magenta design. Technologically, this ball is a genuine oddity of its era. While most manufacturers generally conceived their so-called Tour Editions as toned-down, more controllable versions of their original balls, Visionary went exactly the opposite direction here. The Warlock DC Tour Edition was deliberately built more aggressive and stronger than the regular Warlock DC. The technological foundation is the heavily gripping Warlock DC Tour Solid Reactive cover, which comes out of the box with a dull 800 buffed finish. This very coarsely textured surface was developed specifically for high oil volumes and demanding conditions. Inside the ball spins the proven asymmetric DC core, with DC standing for Differential Control. At a standard weight of 15 pounds, this core delivers a medium 2.540 RG combined with a strong 0.048 differential as well as a slight 0.006 intermediate differential. This specific pairing of a dynamic, asymmetric weight block and the extremely traction-heavy, dull shell is aimed at grabbing extremely early in the heads and building a very heavy, steadily rolling forward motion.
Comparison Comparing the Visionary Warlock DC Tour Edition to a strong, modern solid ball like the Storm Phaze II makes the technological differences between the respective decades very clear, even though the basic mission of the balls is identical. Both models use a strong solid cover and are designed to read the lane early on heavy oil. The Storm Phaze II, however, uses a strong symmetric core with an extremely low RG and builds a considerably more explosive and more continuous move into the pocket at the breakpoint. The Warlock DC Tour Edition, by contrast, relies primarily on the massive physical traction of its 800 surface in the heads to navigate through deep oil patterns, and rolls in a far more classic, arcing fashion. Drawing a direct comparison to the original, purple Visionary Warlock DC, the changed design philosophy of the Tour Edition becomes especially clear. While the original aimed at maximum length and an aggressive snap with its pearl cover, the Tour Edition almost completely ignores length, reads the lane significantly earlier and delivers a smoother overall reaction that responds far less abruptly to friction that appears suddenly at the end of the oil pattern.
On the Lanes In practical use on the lane, the Visionary Warlock DC Tour Edition proves to be a highly specialized powerhouse for fresh, heavily oiled conditions and long oil patterns. If you have trouble getting your ball to start rolling early in the oil because of high ball speed or a lower rev rate, you should benefit massively from the strong surface and the asymmetric DC core. Thanks to its extremely early hook, this ball is excellently suited to bowlers who prefer a direct line and are looking for maximum control over the entire length of the lane, since the otherwise often critical reaction to dried-out outside boards is heavily smoothed out. This leads to very reliable and consistent carry at the pin deck, as long as there is enough oil volume on the lane to keep the ball from burning up prematurely. Once transition sets in over the course of a league session, however, and the boards in the front part of the lane dry up more and more, this ball becomes extremely difficult to play very quickly. On dry conditions the rough cover uses up its rotational energy far too early, which inevitably leads to the ball rolling into the pins flat and without power. It is therefore a highly specialized ball that shines primarily at the start of a competition on heavy oil and should be swapped out in time for a weaker option with more length.
