First Impressions
Released in June 2002, the Visionary Purple Ice Executioner comes in a rich violet and uses a special Light-Load Particle Pearl coverstock. Inside works the asymmetric Executioner core, which at a reference weight of 15 pounds delivers an RG of 2.540 and a significant differential of 0.045. This combination of numbers places the ball in the medium range and should provide controlled, even energy release across the entire length of the lane. The surface comes out of the box with a 600 matte finish. Thanks to this heavily roughened surface and the particles mixed into the cover, the ball reads the lane very early and creates an exceptionally smooth, predictable motion. The manufacturer designed this model primarily for difficult and inconsistent lane conditions, where an aggressive change of direction would be a disadvantage. The whole construction aims to combine the gentle, controlled roll of traditional urethane balls with the modern hitting power of reactive shells. Instead of relying on extreme angles, this ball puts calm and stable traction front and center.
Comparison Within its own Executioner line, the Purple Ice positions itself as the preferred solution for challenging patterns where too strong a reaction absolutely has to be avoided, while the closely related Charcoal Executioner, with its pure solid shell, grabs even earlier and is more aggressive overall in deep oil. Drawing a comparison to models from other manufacturers, the Purple Ice Executioner shows clear parallels to the Brunswick BVP Mammoth, which came to market in a similar era. Both balls use particle technology in the surface to generate reliable traction in oil without overreacting at the end of the oil pattern. In a direct comparison to the Brunswick BVP Mammoth, however, the Visionary Purple Ice Executioner acts minimally later through the first boards due to its slightly higher RG and offers a somewhat rounder arc toward the pocket. Compared to typical polished pearl balls that are built for maximum length and a sharp change of direction, the Purple Ice generates a considerably weaker but far more predictable hook, since it does not react abruptly to dry sections of the lane but instead sheds its energy very evenly and continuously.
On the Lanes The Visionary Purple Ice Executioner is built for demanding house shots and tricky tournament patterns where absolute control is the top priority. When the lanes become error-prone from heavy play and the inevitable transition produces unpredictable reactions from standard reactive balls, this model offers extremely stable and confidence-inspiring ball motion. The ball needs a sufficient volume of oil in the heads, because otherwise the matte particle shell grabs the lane too early and there is a risk that the ball loses all of its rotational energy before reaching the pocket. Once the ball reaches the friction at the end of the oil pattern, it develops an even, wide arcing motion instead of turning sharply toward the pins. That makes it especially valuable for players who prioritize consistency and want to strictly avoid sudden overreaction on the backend. One challenge for this particular cover shows up with heavy carrydown. If the oil has been pushed too far down the lane by previous shots, the Purple Ice Executioner tends to slide slightly past the breakpoint, so the hook is no longer converted effectively enough to ensure the ideal entry angle. Under the right, oilier conditions, bowlers with medium to higher ball speed in particular benefit greatly from the predictability. Despite the overall rather gentle and rounded motion on the lane, the symbiosis of the asymmetric core and the particle shell produces excellent carry, so the pins fall very reliably even at flatter entry angles.
