BOWLING BALL INFOS

First Impressions
The Visionary Centaur Green/Blue, officially released in April 2004, is a bowling ball deliberately conceived as a budget-friendly yet highly functional option for league bowlers. Visually, it stands out thanks to the striking green-and-blue design that gives it its name. The cover on this model is made from reactive Centaur Solid material. Out of the box, this surface carries a 1000-grit matte finish. That intentionally rough texture is designed to give the ball a solid baseline of traction as soon as it leaves the bowler's hand. The real character of this ball, however, is defined by its internal design. Inside works a heavily modified version of the well-known symmetrical DC core. Visionary made decisive changes for the Centaur Green/Blue: the lower cap of the original core was removed entirely, the density distribution of the material was fundamentally recalculated, and an additional shell was placed around the inner portion of the core. The resulting specs for a 15-pound ball illustrate just how control-oriented this model is: the RG sits at a very high 2.610, while the differential comes in at an exceptionally low 0.015. This construction results in minimal flare potential, generally two inches or less. As a result, the ball presents almost no fresh surface to the lane as it rotates, which produces a very mild and even reaction.
Comparison
If you bring in a modern, widely known benchmark like the Storm Phaze II for a direct comparison, the massive conceptual differences become abundantly clear despite both models using a solid cover. The Storm Phaze II relies on a highly developed core with a very low RG and a high differential, consistently aimed at early, strong traction in oil, massive flare potential and an enormously powerful, rounded, continuous motion down the entire length of the lane. The Visionary Centaur Green/Blue behaves fundamentally differently here and follows an entirely opposite philosophy. Its extremely high RG forces the ball to travel through the heads noticeably more easily and with less resistance. It gets into a roll considerably later. When the ball finally leaves the oiled areas in the last third of the lane and encounters friction, the extremely low differential prevents any sudden, aggressive or sharp change of direction. Instead of reacting strongly and angularly to the dry end of the lane, the Centaur Green/Blue develops a very even, tame and completely predictable hook. That reaction is far weaker and gentler than the dominant, sweeping motion of the Storm Phaze II, but in exchange it offers unmatched control on difficult patterns.
On the Lanes
In practical use on the lanes, the Visionary Centaur Green/Blue finds its true specialty on drier lane conditions, shorter oil patterns or heavily played-in house shots. Especially on long tournament days or in late league games, when the transition has shifted the oil on the lane dramatically and the front boards have dried up completely, this model plays to all of its strengths. When balls with more dynamic cores start to become uncontrollable, burn energy too early or overreact severely at the breakpoint, the Centaur Green/Blue offers a reliable solution. It is built precisely to get through the dried-out first boards effortlessly and then make a very quiet, steady move toward the pocket. The extremely low flare potential is largely responsible for keeping the ball from digging into the dry lane. That makes it an excellent tactical option if you have a very low ball speed or if you naturally generate a very high number of revs. For those bowlers, the mild core design should help keep the ball on the intended line longer and generate solid carry without risking the ball burning up prematurely or missing the target. On fresh patterns or with high oil volume, however, this very mild dynamic will inevitably reach its limits. Under those conditions the weak core will not be able to develop enough rotational power to build sufficient entry angle for an effective and consistent hit into the pins.
