First Impressions
The Visionary New Breed Pearl catches the eye with its striking color combination of a yellow pearl base and bright red swirls. Technically, this bowling ball is built for an extremely pronounced and late change of direction. Inside works the mildly asymmetric Serpentine core. This complex core design features a dense center, a pronounced cap, and a lighter outer shell. An additional wedge-shaped element on the side of the core creates a moderate mass bias, which allows the driller to fine-tune the ball reaction precisely. The hard specs on a 15-pound ball show a medium RG of 2.560 and a relatively high differential of 0.052. Wrapped around this dynamic powerhouse is the Drakonian Pearl coverstock. To ensure the necessary length on the lane, the surface comes polished to a high gloss with a 1500-grit finish out of the box. This combination of the smooth pearl cover and the asymmetric core should let the ball glide through the heads extremely easily, start rotating only in the late midlane, and save its energy for an explosive reaction at the end of the oil pattern.
Comparison In comparison, the Visionary New Breed Pearl shows a strong ball motion that clearly sets it apart from other balls. Using the Storm Hy-Road Pearl as a reference, which is also known for its length and strong backend reaction, significant differences in the type of direction change become apparent. While the Storm Hy-Road Pearl, with its symmetric core, delivers a rounder though very strong arc at the end of the oil pattern, the Visionary New Breed Pearl behaves noticeably more angular thanks to its mildly asymmetric Serpentine core and the special cap. Once it reaches the friction at the backend, it creates a considerably sharper and more aggressive hook toward the pocket. Compared directly to the in-house Visionary Gladiator Pearl, the New Breed Pearl offers noticeably more length in the skid phase and an even more extreme flip at the breakpoint. Against its sibling, the Visionary New Breed Solid, the pearl version gets through the front part of the lane effortlessly thanks to the polished surface and builds traction much later. When the lane moves into transition over the course of a game and the front boards dry up, the New Breed Pearl retains its kinetic energy extremely well, where a solid model would already burn up far too early and hit flat into the pins.
On the Lanes Given its technical layout, the Visionary New Breed Pearl is the ideal tool for medium oil volumes and typical, forgiving house shots. The smooth surface reliably keeps the ball from grabbing too early in so-called wet-dry conditions. That makes it especially valuable if you like to play the ball well out over the boards and have to rely on strong recovery off the backend. When the ball moves out of the protective oil into the dry area, the combination of the Drakonian Pearl cover and the asymmetric core cap produces a quick buildup of rotation followed by an extremely sharp hook. The resulting steep entry angle into the pocket gives the ball excellent carry and clears the pins with authority. Toward the end of a tournament or a league night, when transition is in full swing and the heads have been played heavily, this bowling ball reaches its full potential. If you throw the ball at lower speed, you'll benefit enormously from the effortless length this ball brings by nature. On very wet or long sport patterns with high oil volume, however, this ball will run into its limits, since the polished shell could skid too long and miss the breakpoint. But when the oil pattern offers some friction in the right places, the Visionary New Breed Pearl delivers a spectacular and hard-hitting performance at the backend.
