First Impressions
The Motiv Venom ExJ arrives as a limited edition in a striking color scheme of dark purple, violet and green with orange-gray Solid NeoMark graphics. This special edition was released in June 2024 in honor of EJ Tackett's legendary 2023 Player of the Year season and extends the proven Venom series with a noticeably more aggressive variant. The technical foundation is the symmetrical Gear Core, which with a low RG of 2.48 (15 lbs) and a differential of 0.034 is considered the gold standard for low-RG/low-differential cores. The Gear Core, already used in the Venom Shock and Hyper Venom, is characterized by quick spin-up behavior and a medium to low flare potential of 3+ inches. The decisive new element is the Turmoil MXC Solid Reactive coverstock, which combines technology elements from the Motiv Evoke and the Forge Flare and has been reinforced with the Duramax additive. This combination should significantly extend the durability of the surface and prevents premature lane shine. The factory surface preparation is 2000 grit LSS, placing the ball clearly in the medium-oil segment, and it is meant as a distinct step forward from the classic Venom Shock.
Comparison Within the Venom product line, the ExJ holds a special position, as it represents the strongest coverstock variant in the series. In a direct comparison to Motiv's Venom Shock, the ExJ is earlier and smoother on the lane, which makes it less suited to steep angles but predestines it as a benchmark ball. While the Venom Shock with its Turmoil MFS coverstock was designed primarily for medium to dry lanes, the ExJ with its MXC technology addresses fresher and more oil-heavy conditions. Motiv's Hyper Venom forms the other end of the spectrum with its Propulsion MXR Pearl Reactive coverstock and delivers more length as well as a considerably more angular backend reaction. The ExJ thus positions itself as the middle, most controlled option in the current Venom family. The Turmoil MXC Solid technology used here shares components with more aggressive balls such as Motiv's Evoke and Forge Flare, but has been implemented on a more moderate cover base. This means that while the ExJ offers earlier and stronger traction than the Venom Shock, it does not reach the extreme aggressiveness of a Forge Flare. This positioning makes it a bridge between classic medium-oil balls and high-performance equipment for heavy oil volumes.
On the Lanes The Venom ExJ shows its strengths primarily as a versatile benchmark ball for medium to medium-heavy lane conditions. If you have a balanced ratio of ball speed and rev rate, the ball should deliver a smooth and controllable ball motion that covers medium to medium-heavy oil volumes. The characteristic motion shows itself in an even, predictable roll through the entire lane with a strong, continuous backend motion. Speed-dominant players should find exactly the support in the ExJ that they may be missing with the Venom Shock — the earlier and smoother coverstock reaction should provide enough traction when the Venom Shock runs too clean through the heads or reacts too weakly. For rev-dominant players, the ExJ opens up new options within the Venom series, since the combination of strong traction in oil and the quick-revving, stable Gear Core should allow use on fresher, heavier oil patterns. The medium flare characteristic prevents excessive reactions, which with high-rev players often lead to uncontrollable pin carry. In practice, the ball is extremely readable over the entire length of the lane, which allows quick adjustments through moves on the approach or ball changes. Energy retention into the pocket appears to be a particular trait — the ball should drive through the pins with minimal deflection and produce strong, consistent pin carry. The combination of controlled roll in the midlane and powerful authority on the backend makes the ExJ a reliable first ball out of the bag on most house shot patterns with medium to heavy oil. The 2000 grit LSS surface also leaves room for individual adjustments — polished for even more length or duller for additional traction in the heads.
