First Impressions
The Columbia 300 Spoiler, released in October 2017, comes in an eye-catching green/blue/black color scheme and expands the Yellow Line Performance series. At its center, the symmetrical Spoiler Core works with a 2.52 RG and a 0.045 differential (at 15 lbs), pointing to a controlled but powerful motion. This core is wrapped in the Bend-It Solid coverstock, finished out of the box at 500/2000 Abralon. That dull surface signals right away that the ball is built to pick up traction early rather than simply skidding over the oil. The combination of a solid surface and the symmetrical core promises a benchmark-style reaction that forgives mistakes and provides stability.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Columbia 300 Sideswipe Solid, the Spoiler reads the lane noticeably earlier. Where the Sideswipe Solid tends to generate a bit more length, the Spoiler digs more aggressively into the heads and the midlane oil. Against the Columbia 300 Juke, which sits in the same line, the Spoiler offers more flare potential and a stronger overall motion thanks to its higher differential. Set alongside an industry standard like the Storm Phaze II, the Spoiler shows a similarly round and predictable motion, but often gets going a tick earlier, which helps it handle excess oil in the front part of the lane better without becoming uncontrollable at the breakpoint.
On the Lanes
This ball is the ideal choice for medium to heavier oil conditions and works excellently as the first ball out of the bag to read the lane. The dull surface smooths out the transition from wet to dry and keeps the ball from reacting too nervously on fresh patterns. It's especially well suited if you like to keep the ball in the track or play moderate angles. Once the lane goes through transition and the heads dry up, the Spoiler may start to lose energy too early; in that case, a move to a shinier ball such as the Spoiler Alert would be advisable. On sport patterns it provides the control needed to hit the pocket reliably without having to depend on unpredictable friction out on the outside boards.
