First Impressions
The Storm Summit Ascent expands the successful Summit line with a solid version in August 2024, combining the proven Centripetal HD core with the innovative A.I. (Amplified Inertia) technology. With an exceptionally low RG of 2.46 and a high differential of 0.056, this symmetrical core presents itself as one of the most dynamic in Storm's current lineup. The combination of low RG and high differential should get the ball into a roll quickly while also generating a high flare potential. The cover is the legendary R2S Solid coverstock that already defined classics like the IQ Tour, here finished at 4000-grit Abralon. This surface prep sets the Summit Ascent apart from typical solid balls, since it runs noticeably cleaner through the heads than comparable solids. The color scheme in Aqua, Smoke and Shadow is rounded out by a new Cream Soda scent that gives the ball a special touch.
Comparison
Within the Summit family, the Ascent slots in between the original Storm Summit with its aggressive TX-23 hybrid cover and the polished Storm Summit Peak. While the original Summit reacts earlier and more controlled, the Ascent offers more length along with a stronger backend reaction. Using the R2S Solid coverstock in combination with 4000-grit makes the Ascent an unusually clean solid ball that behaves more like a weak hybrid. Compared to the Storm Phaze II, the Summit Ascent shows more length and a more pronounced backend motion, while the Phaze II grabs earlier and runs smoother through the pocket. There is an interesting kinship with the Storm IQ Tour, since both use the R2S Solid coverstock at 4000-grit, but the Summit Ascent brings considerably more dynamics and flare thanks to its higher differential. Balls like the Motiv Optimum Idol or the DV8 Verge Solid operate in similar performance ranges, though the Summit Ascent occupies a special niche with its unique combination of clean ball motion and strong backend.
On the Lanes
The Storm Summit Ascent is ideally suited to medium to heavier oil conditions and develops into a reliable benchmark ball after the first few games. One peculiarity shows up in the break-in behavior: for the first two or three games the ball can seem very strong before it settles at a more controlled level. This characteristic should be kept in mind the first time you use it. For strokers the ball offers enough length not to burn up too early, while there is still enough midlane traction to ensure a predictable motion. Power players benefit from the ability to play deeper and open up bigger angles, though carry performance could drop off with overly steep inside angles. The 4000-grit surface allows for a wide range of adjustments: for heavier conditions the surface can be dulled to 2000-grit or lower, while on drier lanes a polish would increase length even further. As a benchmark ball, the Summit Ascent fits perfectly between aggressive asyms and controlled pearls and should deliver consistent results especially on house shots over the course of several games. Its versatility makes it interesting for league bowlers and tournament players alike, with its forgiveness and predictability likely coming into play particularly on varying lane conditions.
