Strike Zone: Bowling Coach
September 11, 2026
Your balls and your line now learn from your own games: Strike Zone figures out which balls work for you on which oil patterns, remembers your line, and keeps track of the lane condition. On top of that, drills got a full overhaul, sessions can have their own names, and your stats get a season filter.
New
📈 Ball ranking learns from your games For each oil pattern, the app compares how often you strike with a ball versus your other balls. If you haven’t bowled much on a pattern yet, it pulls in similar patterns, and your past games count automatically. In setup, when switching balls, and in pattern analysis, each ball shows your strike rate on that pattern, e.g. “X 49% (12).”
🏆 Your results in the ranking (Pro feature) Your results now factor into your balls’ grade and rank. A green or red arrow shows where they moved the ranking, along with a reason like “Your strike rate with this ball: 49%, with your other balls: 28%.”
⭐ Pattern Briefing with your results (Plus feature) The ball recommendation in the briefing cites real numbers from your own games and recommends the same ball as setup and pattern analysis.
🎯 Track your line Set your stance and target board, e.g. “18 → 10.” In setup, your line is prefilled with your last line on that pattern or a suggestion. During a game, the line button opens a menu with a lane graphic, left/right, quick moves (1 · 1, 2 · 2, 2 · 1, 3 · 2), and board-by-board fine-tuning. Moves apply from the next frame, your history stays visible, and after a pause or in the next game of a session you keep bowling with your last line.
🔄 Line matched to lane condition (Pro feature) Switch to Transition or Carry Down before your first shot and your starting line adjusts. Switch mid-game and the app reminds you of the line you used the last time in that condition.
👥 Bowlers on your lane Enter how many people are bowling on your lane, in setup or right in the game. That makes the lane condition estimate much more accurate, even if you’re only tracking your own game.
✅ Apply coach tips directly (Pro feature) When the coach suggests a move during practice, one tap on “Applied” shifts your line.
📒 “Your Experience” in pattern analysis (Pro feature) For each lane condition, you see your proven starting line, how your strike rate changes after moves, and how much the lane has typically been bowled on before you make your first adjustment. You also get your balls with strike rate and most-played line.
🛢️ View the oil pattern during a game Tap the pattern card in Game Tracking. You’ll see the pattern as a lane graphic along with length, volume, ratio, and your recommended line with stance, target, and exit point.
🌊 Choose the lane condition (Pro feature) Set whether the lane is fresh, in Transition, or in Carry Down. The current condition shows right on the pattern card.
🔍 Automatic lane condition detection (Pro feature) During your game, the app estimates how the lane is changing based on the pattern, number of games bowled, other bowlers, and your shots. As soon as something shifts, it suggests the new condition, which you accept with one tap or dismiss. If you want, you can see the reasoning and when a change is likely.
🪜 Condition Ladder fully playable The app builds a ball ladder from your arsenal, strongest to weakest. It shows your current ball and frame counter and calls out every ball change.
🧭 Pattern Scout with pattern suggestions The app suggests an oil pattern you haven’t bowled yet. Or pick the pattern that’s out at your center today yourself.
📝 Notes right in the drill Pattern Scout, Transition Tracker, and Ball Comparison now have their own notes field. Pattern Scout notes are automatically saved to that pattern in “My Notebook.”
⚖️ Ball Comparison shows your balls Ball Comparison now shows the balls you picked for frames 1–5 and 6–10.
🏷️ Name your sessions Give your sessions custom names like “Week 8,” “City Championship,” or “Spare Practice,” optionally right when you start a game. The app suggests names based on game type: for league games the week counts up automatically, and recently used names are one tap away.
✏️ Rename sessions later Long-press a session in your game history or use the new button in edit mode. Clear the field to go back to the default title.
📅 Season filter in stats (Pro feature) At the top of your stats, switch between “Current Season” and “All Seasons” for Overall, Competition, and Practice, including What-If analysis, pocket analysis, and match play record. If today falls within one of your seasons, that season is shown; if your last season has already ended, you see all games since then. The app remembers the view you picked last.
Improved
🎳 Consistent ball recommendations Setup, ball switching, pattern analysis, and the briefing now rank your balls the same way everywhere.
💬 Coach tips matched to lane condition (Pro feature) In Transition, the coach recommends bigger moves inside; in Carry Down, more parallel moves outside. You also get a short note on the lane.
🔁 Ball choice matched to lane condition (Pro feature) The coach factors in lane condition when suggesting ball changes, like weaker, shinier balls in Transition and more surface in Carry Down. How well your balls fit the selected pattern during a game now accounts for lane condition too.
📊 More accurate ball stats Baker, Scotch, and No-Tap games no longer skew the stats for your balls and lines.
🗃️ Deleted balls stay in your stats If you remove a ball from your arsenal, its games stay correctly assigned.
🔤 Consistent terms In pattern analysis, lane conditions are now called “Transition” and “Carry Down” instead of “Burn” and “Carry.”
📋 Session names everywhere The session name now shows in the session bar during a game, the end-of-session summary, your game history, the session picker, and as the title on shared session cards and texts. It sticks with paused games and carries over when you combine individual games into a session later.
📤 Season view in stats With the season filter on, the share card shows the season name instead of “Overall.” In the Season tab, the What-If card now looks the same as in the other tabs.
⚠️ Heads-up when you’re short on balls Condition Ladder and Ball Comparison now let you know when your arsenal doesn’t have enough balls for the drill.
📖 Clearer drill instructions Instructions now spell out what the app handles and what you do yourself.
Fixed
- Condition Ladder Only a black screen appeared after starting the drill.
- Corner Pin Gauntlet A passed drill was scored as “not completed” and gave no XP.
- Pocket Precision The drill always counted as passed, even without hits.
- Self-confirmed drills For drills like Turkey Chase, Line Consistency, or Sport Pattern Challenge, “Yes, done” was ignored.
- Multi-Pin Spare Run The drill always counted as passed.
- Drill instructions for lefties Left-handers saw right-handed pins in some instructions.
- Placeholders in drill texts Some texts showed placeholders like {ballA} or {boards} instead of the actual values.
- Stable ball ranking Urethane balls on short patterns no longer change position every time you open the ranking.
- Urethane ratings Urethane ball ratings now correctly account for the selected lane condition.
- Lane condition on resume Your lane condition is now kept when you resume a paused game.
- Pattern graphic The graphic runs more reliably when you switch between patterns.
- Duplicate patterns Three duplicate oil patterns were removed from the catalog.
- Spare ball at game start If you picked your spare ball after your strike ball, it sometimes wasn’t applied correctly.
- What-If in the Season tab The analysis showed practice numbers from all time periods instead of the selected season.
- Pocket analysis in the Season tab The season date range wasn’t applied.
- Season dates and time zones In some time zones, season dates were shown and filtered one day off.
- Stats view A possible cause of crashes was fixed.

The oil pattern scanner has been rebuilt from the ground up: it works reliably again, and image processing now happens entirely inside the EU. On top of that, all Plus AI modules run on a newer model generation, and the pattern library finally shows long tournament names in full.
Improved
🔍 Oil pattern scanner completely rebuilt Recognition now runs entirely on our own infrastructure, on servers inside the EU — your photo no longer leaves Europe. We also stopped guessing: if no name on the sheet is clearly readable, the scanner now says so. Before, a guessed name could match a real but wrong pattern in the database — and you’d walk onto the lane with the wrong strategy.
⭐ Plus AI modules moved to a new model generation (Plus feature) All seven AI coaching modules — Weekly Briefing, Pattern Strategy, Ball Advisor, Training Focus, Season Review, Coach Chat and Scorecard Scanner — now run on a newer model generation. Processing still happens exclusively inside the EU, now through an endpoint with an explicit data residency commitment.
⭐ Saved AI content is regenerated once (Plus feature) Because of the switch, briefings, recommendations and reviews you’ve already generated are discarded once and created fresh the next time you open them. That takes a little longer just this one time — after that everything behaves as usual.
📋 Long pattern names are fully readable now A lot of patterns carry long official names like “2026 USBC Open Championships Team Squad B”. Until now those got cut off after a few characters, so entries from the same tournament looked identical. The name now sits on its own line across the full card width and wraps to two lines when needed — thumbnail, length, oil volume and ratio sit below it in a shared info row. The “NEW” marker and the favorite heart stay where you’re used to them, and the large card for your active pattern wraps long names to two lines as well.
💳 Purchase handling updated Purchases and subscriptions run through updated purchase handling. Existing purchases are untouched: Pro one-time purchases and Plus subscriptions continue exactly as before, restore on a new device included.
Fixed
- Oil pattern scanner returned no results The scanner had started reporting “not recognized” even when the sheet was perfectly readable. The cause was the previous external provider and is gone with the rebuild.
- Push notifications lead straight to the content again Tapping a notification about new balls or new patterns sometimes only landed you on the home screen. Now search opens again with a filtered list of the new balls — for a single ball, straight to its details, or to your arsenal view if you already own it. For patterns, the overview opens with the “New” filter active, and a single new pattern takes you right into the analysis view.
- Jumps from a closed app and during catalog loading If the app was fully closed or the catalog hadn’t finished loading when you tapped, the jump got dropped. It’s now kept and executed as soon as everything is ready.
- Error messages in Ball Advisor corrected When the AI coach was briefly unreachable, all four modes showed internal placeholders instead of a readable message. You now get the proper notice plus a retry option.
- Back navigation in Glossary, Drill Tracking and Shot Analyzer Swipe gesture and back button now reliably close that section instead of leaving the app.
Under the Hood
🛠️ Current platform requirements met The app is updated to the latest generation of iOS and Android platform requirements.
📄 Privacy policy updated More precise details on processing regions and the service providers involved.
📦 Smaller install size An internal component we no longer use has been removed, so the app takes up less space on your device.

The centerpiece of this update is the new Arsenal Ranking: for your pattern, your balls are now scored head-to-head so you spot the best fit instantly. On top of that, steadier catalog updates and fully expandable stats.
New
🏆 Arsenal Ranking for Your Pattern For the selected pattern, the app now scores your balls directly against each other: at a glance you see which fits best (#1, marked gold), which comes next, and so on. Each ball’s overall grade (A–E) stays visible alongside, so you can tell whether your best ball is also objectively strong – or whether another one would be the smarter pick for this pattern. Tap a ball in the Analysis view and you get its arsenal rank and overall grade with a short read on it, and the rank now shows up mid-game when you switch balls too. Spare balls stay out of it – they’re for clearing, not for the first throw, and are no longer graded for the pattern.
🎯 Ball Grades Right at Game Setup Pick a pattern on the “New Game” screen and every ball card shows its suitability grade (A–E) right away – with your balls already sorted by fit, best first. So you can see which ball matches the pattern before your first throw, without jumping into the game.
Improved
📊 Fully Expandable Stats The “By Ball”, “By Pattern”, and “By Center” sections now expand all the way – not just the Top 5. Tap “Show all” for the full list, “Show less” to collapse it again.
📥 More Reliable Catalog Updates The ball and pattern catalog now loads reliably even on a slow or shaky connection, so new balls show up far more dependably. If an update still fails, the app flags it right on the home screen – one tap retries it. And under Settings → Data & Backup you can refresh the catalog manually anytime.
Fixed
- Update Notes from Settings The entry now opens the update notes correctly and visibly.
- Home Screen Responds Again Fixed the related issue where the home screen became unresponsive after opening the notes.

This release is all about tracking and stats: you can now log the lane for every game and break it down per center, get ball recommendations matched to the oil pattern, and a completely rebuilt stats screen. On top of that: community ball ratings, a handicap field, and an overhauled video zoom.
New
🛤️ Lane Tracking Log the lane for every game, either as a single lane or a cross-lane pair (e.g. „5-6″). You’ll find the entry in Game Setup under „Advanced Options,” and you can add it later anytime from the game detail. In your stats, „By Center” now has its own lane breakdown — average, high, and game count per lane or lane pair — plus a one-tap jump to the matching games via the new lane filter. Now you can finally tell which lane suits you.
🎯 Ball Recommendation by Oil Pattern Once you’ve picked an oil pattern, the ball picker automatically sorts your balls by how well they fit the pattern and shows each one a color grade from A to E. Pro users also get the best-matching ball as a „Best Pick” card up top — with a match score and two short reasons — plus the score on every other ball. It works mid-game when you swap balls too; without a pattern selected, the familiar slot sorting stays.
👥 Ball Ratings Rate balls from 1 to 5 stars and see at a glance how the community sizes up a ball. The average rating and vote count show up on every ball detail from the very first rating. Pro users can vote straight from the ball details, their arsenal, or the coach recommendations and can change or remove their rating anytime; Free users see the community rating. Extra guidance while you browse the database.
🧮 Handicap per Game You can now assign a handicap from 0 to 150 to any game — optional and for all game types. The value sits next to your score in the tracking header (e.g. 97 (121)), also shows on the MAX score and on the game-over screen as „with handicap: …,” and stays editable later in the game detail. Your scratch score is left untouched.
📍 Shot Tendency per Ball (Pro) Under „By Ball” in your stats, each ball now shows its pocket tendency: how reliably it hits the pocket and whether it tends to run flush, high, light, or Brooklyn. Perfect for sizing up your arsenal. Requires tracked pocket shots.
Improved
📊 Fully Reworked Stats Stats are rebuilt into three clear levels: „At a Glance” (average with trend, strike, spare, and open rate plus avg. first ball as a 2×2 grid), „Insights,” and „Details.” The detail sections — spare details, pocket, by ball, by pattern, by center — are now collapsed, so you open exactly what you care about. Fewer duplicates, no more endless scrolling.
⚙️ Cleaned-Up Game Setup Game Setup is noticeably more compact: you pick game type and format via chips, and a new „Advanced Options” section bundles format, teammates, pocket tracking, lane, and handicap without cluttering the main area. The bowling center input field also no longer gets covered by the start button.
🔍 New Video Zoom Zoom in the video analyzer now works on Android too (previously iOS only) and was rebuilt from scratch. You pan the zoomed image with one finger, double-tap to toggle between 1× and 3×, and the zoom stays put while you mark revolutions 1, 2, and 3 — it only resets after the last one or via a long press on the tape button. Timeline scrubbing also feels smoother thanks to a unified touch system.
Fixed
- Video froze from shot 2 on After switching from the speed to the rev-rate phase, the player sometimes stopped responding to seek, scrub, or play from the second shot onward. That’s fixed — playback now stays usable throughout.
- Drill quests never completed Drill-based weekly quests (e.g. „Complete: 10-Pin Challenge”) didn’t count as done even after a successful drill — no check, no XP. Now they count as soon as you finish the drill during the current week (whether or not it succeeds). Drills you already did this week are filled in automatically the next time you open the Training tab, XP included.
- Sleepers no longer count as splits The 2-8 and 3-9 (double wood, where one pin hides directly behind another) were wrongly counted as splits. Your split stats and split rate are more accurate from now on.

This release launches Strike Zone Plus — our AI Coach subscription that builds on Pro. Plus new filters, more control over your sessions, and a fresh spare drill.
New
⭐ Strike Zone Plus — Your AI Coach across six areas (Plus feature) The new subscription bundles six AI-powered areas, all reachable from the new Coach Hub. Plus builds on Pro: you need active Pro plus a Plus subscription. All Plus content is clearly marked — Free and Pro users see a lock hint and can jump straight to the Plus paywall. Languages DE/EN, EU hosting, GDPR-compliant, anonymous device ID instead of a user account.
⭐ Weekly Recap — Your weekly review (Plus feature) Sundays at 8 PM, your Coach drops in with a personal weekly summary: highlights from your sessions tied to actual games, a clear focus for next week, a matching training tip (linked directly to a drill in the Training section when one fits), and behavioral patterns spotted across weeks. Built from your last 7 days in detail plus 4 weeks of trend data. The push notification runs locally on your device — no server pushes. A Smart Card on the Home screen surfaces the latest recap even without the push.
⭐ Pattern Strategy — Strategy for every oil pattern (Plus feature) Pick any pattern from the library — even one you’ve never played — and your Coach builds you a strategy: recommended starting position, line strategy, which balls from your arsenal fit best here, and what to watch for when the pattern breaks down. Request counter in the Hub: 20 per month.
⭐ Ball Advisor — Four AI modes for your arsenal (Plus feature) A dedicated Hub with four modes. Your Next Ball suggests top 3 for a specific arsenal slot and compares specs against what you already own. Is This Ball Worth It? analyzes any ball from the market with a clear verdict (Perfect / Strong / With Caveats / Mismatch), three pros and three cons — also reachable via the new “Have the Coach review it” button on every ball detail page. Dormant Balls finds balls you haven’t thrown in 8+ weeks, with a diagnosis and a direct action (resurface, check layout, mark as spare, remove from arsenal, give it another shot). For Your Player Type delivers top 5 market balls matching your RPM, speed, hand, and sub-type. A toggle for region-restricted balls, an overall counter (60/month across all four modes), and a per-mode breakdown live in the Hub.
⭐ AI Coach Chat — Just ask (Plus feature) Full-screen chat in the Coach Hub. The Coach knows your profile, arsenal, stats, and recently played patterns. Ask about technique, equipment, lane reading, mental game, training plans, or general bowling fundamentals. Off-topic (other sports, medical diagnoses, small talk) gets politely steered back — marked with a yellow flag. Limits: 15 questions/day, 100/month, counters live in the header. One ongoing conversation, the Coach remembers the last 5 Q&A pairs, automatic fresh start after 24h of inactivity or on a new day. History stays local on your device.
⭐ Scorecard Scanner — Track games from a photo (Plus feature) Instead of tapping in every frame: snap the lane monitor, done. Recognizes Brunswick, Qubica, AMF, and Steltronic. With multiple bowlers, pick your column, the frames land in tracking, and you can still adjust anything. The original photo stays accessible later via a button in tracking. If recognition was unsure, a banner warns you. 30 scans per month.
⭐ Friends & Lists (Plus feature) Add other bowlers as friends — button right on the bowler profile. The Friends Hub shows everyone with league average, training average, high game, games, arsenal grade, and top ball. Up to 50 custom lists with names and emoji icons (team, club, training partners — your call). An activity dot on the avatar shows when a friend updated their profile since your last visit. Everything runs locally — no servers, no external requests.
🎳 Corner-First Drill (new spare drill) Two spare skills in one frame: Ball 1 targets your weak corner pin (10-pin right / 7-pin left), Ball 2 cleans up whatever’s left. You drill 3-6-9 on the corner and multi-pin conversion at the same time. Difficulty 3/5, about 20 min, 30 XP. Goal: 7 of 10 frames with a corner hit and a closed spare. Requires Spare Level 2 and a spare ball in your arsenal. Find it in the Training tab under Spare Drills.
🚫 USBC tournament-ineligibility flag Balls on the official USBC National Tournament Ineligible List now show a subtle red banner in the detail view (Search, Arsenal, Recommendations), right under the slot pill. Tap it for the listing date and which tournament series are affected (USBC Open & Women’s Championships, Bowlers Journal, Senior Masters/Queens, Youth Open, Junior Gold) — with a clear note that league play and most European competitions are not affected. Available in DE/EN.
Improved
🎯 Ball filter by RG and DIFF The ball database now filters precisely: RG (2.43–2.80) and DIFF (0.000–0.080), both with quick-select Low/Medium/High. A Vintage mode unlocks classics before 2005 with DIFF up to 0.110. Active filters show above the list and can be removed individually with a tap — all filters now live in one tidy sheet.
🗺️ Pattern library filter Four dimensions: Type (Sport/Challenge/House, multi-select), Ratio (Flat 1:1 to Easy House 1:15), Length (32–50 ft), and Oil Volume (15–35 mL). Range dimensions come with quick chips (Low/Medium/High). The Quick Chips All/New/Favorites stay on top and combine freely. A badge on the filter button shows active filters, “Reset all” wipes the slate. Sport / Challenge / House now use the same thresholds everywhere (ratio 4 and 7).
🔍 Smarter search Ball search now ignores special characters — “IQ” finds the “!Q Tour” too. Roman and Arabic numerals are interchangeable: “Phaze 2” finds “Phaze II” and vice versa. Covers all numbers from 1 to 10.
📏 Refined PAP settings Wider range: PAP Over now from −6 3/4″ to +6 3/4″, Up/Down symmetric from −3″ to +3″ — covers spinners, two-handers, and all pro layouts. Fine-tuning in 1/16″ steps instead of 1/4″, values displayed in pro shop format (5 11/16″ instead of 5.69″). New stepper buttons next to the value for precise tweaks without slider gymnastics. With a negative Over value, the direction arrow now correctly points opposite your throwing hand.
📅 Season management New “Close Season” button in Statistics: automatically creates a season for all games not yet assigned to one — from your last season end to today (or from your very first game if you’ve never had a season). One tap, name/period/game type are pre-filled, edit icon lets you adjust. The button only appears when there’s actually a gap to close.
📝 Reshape sessions later Right in the Game History screen, you can now tidy things up. “+ New Session” bundles at least 2 individual games into a session, pattern/location/game type are inherited from the oldest game. “✎ Edit Session” lets you add or remove games live. If only one game remains, the session dissolves automatically. Games never get lost — they just go back to being individual games. Free users max 3 games/session, Pro unlimited. Stats recompute automatically.
Fixed
- Pattern sharing: difficulty badge On the shared pattern card, the difficulty badge now shows the correct category (Sport / Challenge / House). Previously, low ratios were mistakenly flagged as “Easy” and high ratios as “Sport”.
- AI Coach Chat: On newer iPhones (16 series and similar), the input field and “Send” button were covered by the on-screen keyboard while typing. Both now stay reliably visible — the keyboard correctly pushes the input field up.
- Ball Filters (Library → Filter): The min/max inputs for RG and differential were unreachable when the keyboard was open. The filter sheet now shifts up so both fields and the “Apply” buttons stay visible.
- Oil Pattern Filters (Pattern Library → Filter): Same behavior for the range inputs Ratio, Length, and Volume — fixed as well.
